We are aware that TaxCycle users may have encountered EFILE error 2252 more frequently since mid-June than earlier in the tax season.
We believe this may be happening because the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has already started to recalculate the required repayments for all taxpayers with a Home Buyers’ Plan (HBP), regardless of whether their 2023 return has been filed yet or not.
For any taxpayers who have not yet filed a 2023 tax return, the CRA is adding the unpaid 2023 amount to the repayments for the next couple of years, resulting in a false amount required for 2023. These incorrect HBP repayment amounts are then being included in the data received through AFR.
Before you file a 2023 return for a client who has an HBP with a repayment due for 2023, please read the client’s latest 2022 Notice of assessment (NOA) or reassessment where you will find the exact HBP repayment amount that must be entered in TaxCycle. Do not assume that the amounts reported by Auto-fill my return (AFR) or displayed in Represent a Client (RAC) are correct.
This is the unfortunate consequence of a CRA process that starts preparing for next season well in advance. This issue will continue until EFILE closes in late January 2025.
When EFILE reopens in February 2025, the AFR data regarding the HBP required repayment will once again be correct for the bulk of the new filing season.
